Dearest Debi Crochet Mandala for Marink
Earlier in the yearΒ we lost a creative crochet designer named Marinke aka Wink from AΒ Creative Being to depression.Β I have since been noticing that people have been creating Mandalas for Marinke using the hashtag #MandalasforMarinke and thought I would jump on board, this would be a way for me to get back to doing what I love after dealing with depression myself.
If you have been following me since I first started this blog you may have noticed that in the last year I haven’t really beenΒ blogging. I was blogging one pattern a week last year until the depression hit me. My world turned upside down. Someone had been stealing from me for years and I had no idea until something very important was stolen and can never be replaced to thenΒ comeΒ online to see that people were stealing my work and offering it free.Β It really hurt to know that people would steal from me, knowing I offer over half of my work for free, the views on this blog are how I pay to offer patterns free. I broke down and decided to take the time to focus on me, my life, my kids. Crochet became a hobby and my blog got put on the back burner.
I didn’t know of Marinke or her work before she lost her battle to depression but I was really saddened by the news for I, myself was working so hard on my own depression it made me sad to see someone lose the battle. I have worked really hard on myself over the last year and I have come a long way, I am in a much better place and am now looking forward gettingΒ back to crochet and my blog.
To start I would like to offer this Mandala for Marinke free to celebrate her life and creativity as well as to raise awareness about depression. There are some different bloggers that have awareness projects you can learn more about HERE. I hope that I will be the only one offering this pattern free and also I would like to say that as a person dealing with depression that you take care when leaving comments for bloggers, some of us do this as a way to deal with our depression, there is another person on the other end reading your comment and they have feelings.
For the love of crochet, share LINKS, not patterns!
Note: This post was prepared before I even made the mandala. As I write this note now, I am done with my mandala and waiting for my testers to get back to me so I can publish this pattern.
It all started with an idea. When I first made my Love Flower Field Square the hearts I worked in the round and really liked it but I couldn’t make the square small enough to fit 6 inches so I frogged my work and squared it off. I thought that I would reattempt working the hearts in the round and would make a Mandala in memory of Wink but couldn’t remember what I did so I changed it up a little and then decided to try to add butterflies. I cannot believe that I got them right the first time! Not anything like I had planned but even better than I imagined.
I am so happy that I took the opportunity to make this mandala, I’ve really enjoyed making them, so much so I’m making a 3rd while I wait to publish this pattern. I hope that you too can find the same joy I had hooking these beautiful crochet mandalas in memory of Wink. β₯οΈ Debi

Thank you so much for the free pattern. I am sorry you have been through so much with people stealing from you and giving your patterns away for free. I am so glad you are in a better place now.
Jennifer Toal says
What a beautiful mandala, so pretty with the butterflies. Thank you so much for sharing it and your story of how you’re coping with depression. It’s time that everyone sees mental health equally as important as physical health. It can strike any of us. Courageous of you to speak out so that others realise they too are not alone. Take care and get well. xxx

Debi I want to thank you for this beautiful Mandela ,I also suffer from depression with fibromyalgia. The butterfly is a symbol of fibro so this is perfect. Again thank you for your beautiful design.
Maria Pacheco says
Thank you for the beautiful pattern. This is such a wonderful gesture you have made in remembrance of Wink.
I’m sorry to hear that you too suffer from depression. I suffer from severe depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I know how difficult it can be sometimes to just make it through the day. I like to use crochet as a means of therapy. When you are feeling worthless and hopeless working on and completing a project invalidates those feelings. It gives you a sense of accomplishment.
I appreciate the fact that you share so much of your work with us for free and that we can benefit from it. Hang in there and know that you have many fans rooting for you!
Sandra says
You’re right, this mandala did make me smile. Thank you Debi for sharing your art and your heart. I’m sure there are others who will be saying ‘I’m glad its not just me! but admire you for being able to put into words the awful feeling that hits you out of the blue. I’m off to do my mandala now and will think of you and Wink and your beautiful work. π

Thank you for your beautiful mandala! I shall make this and enjoy. And thank you for having the courage to share your own story.
I’ve heard of more than one crochet blogger complaining of others stealing their patterns and either offering them for ‘free’ or selling them as their own designs! some have even quite blogging because of this.. And I cannot blame them
There must be something that can be done about those who steal your patterns and then offer them as their own designs! Perhaps CGOA can do something about this. I would think that once you publish as your own it is an automatic copyright….and the date of publication would show that you published first. Have you tried contacting those who steal your patterns?
There are some who actually have no idea that taking a pattern and then claiming as their own is even stealing! (just like those who gnosh freely at the bulk candy or nut bins at the grocery store). They MUST be stopped!
I do hope you have some recourse against those who stole items from you. That feels like such a violation of your life!
God bless you. I hope you hang in there with us….you need to have a friend to whom you can turn in darker, scarier moments….someone who will not judge you, but understand and be willing to BE THERE for you.
Again, Deb, thank you! Your work is beautiful! I do hope you don’t stop blogging….because you would be missed!
DearestDebi says
I’d like to believe that there are more people who support the industry than there are those who steal. If you’re using fake currency/coins to buy something it’s probably illegal and doesn’t support the designer/industry. The best thing is share links to original sources. Thanks for your kind words π

I love butterflies they have a real meaning in my life so I cant wait to try this. Its really beautiful and Im so sorry that all those bad things happened to you. I know exactly how you feel. Im glad you are feeling better! and WELCOME BACK!
PeabuttonsMom says
Greetings dear kindred Spirit! I have been one who has followed you from the beginning. I remember the struggle you were having in the beginning with the “friend” who was stealing. It also saddens me that Marinke lost her battle. But she definitely lives on! Her patterns, her vibrancy, her life, is seen in every duplicated stitch. I am so VERY HAPPY that you have come through the valley a stronger person. I’ve been there too. This year has taken a small toll on me as well. But with crochet we survive and survive we must. We are creatives. Our work is our own and by the Grace of God it will continue to be known as ours. Isn’t it amazing when we get stumped and have to make changes only to watch the pattern of creation unfold before our eyes?? Beautiful indeed is Marinke’s Mandala. I have never yet tackled a mandala. This one has changed my mind. Making for myself, for Marinke’s memory, and for your prosperity I share the link. Blessings and hugs to you, Dearest Debi!

Many thanks for a wonderful pattern. It will take pride of place in the kitchen once I’ve completed the mandala x

Thank you so much for this pattern. I hadn’t heard of Mandalas for Marinke, but it sounds like a wonderful project to be a part of. I also have depression, among many other things and I want to congratulate you for waking up this morning and making the world a better place with your art.
I am really looking forward to getting this on the hook. The butterflies are special to me, as a purple butterfly is the symbol for Fibromyalgia (another thing I have).
When I complete this, I’ll be sure to link you in Ravelry and if I ever get my own blog up and going, back to this page to share.
Thank you again!

Dear Debi,
As a individual with depression and a crocheter, Wink’s death made a huge impact on me. I had been following her blog and had a few brief interactions with her on Facebook. I adored her style and her patterns. I had bought her books and some of her patterns. I was not aware though, of her battle. Some how I missed that post or started following her after it until…..her last post had me fearful for her. Having experience with the feelings and the hopelessness it brought it home how fragile life is!. Your pattern is gorgeous and I hope to be able to complete it. Thank you for your honesty and support. Blessings, prayers, and ((hugs)) to you.
Kim says
This is beautiful! I, too, have struggled with depression my whole life. So do 3 of my 5 kids. With God’s help and the support of friends and family we move forward each day. Some day others will understand what we go through.
Thank you for this lovely pattern.

Hi Debi,
I, too, suffer from depression. I admire the fact that you’re able to accomplish so much creatively. I do have a question, though. Does your site use cookies? I’ve noticed that every single time I want to download a free pattern I need to ‘join’. Isn’t there a way the site could track this so I don’t have to do it repeatedly? (I know that in the greater scheme of things this is a small issue, just wondering. π )
DearestDebi says
You’re not joining anything, just having a download link emailed out. I may look into a membership option the only thing is that it would probably be a pretty big expense I just can’t afford right now.
Rachel says
I hope you feel really proud and excited about your creative efforts. You’re clearly very talented and I am sad that the crochet community has missed a whole year of your blog and you’ve had a year learning to feel passionate about things again. Depression has been one of my battles and I am glad to say I have fought and won more than once. I found the link to this pattern on the CCC social group Facebook and came straight on over to check it out. I will go check you out on ravelry now too. So many brilliant designers so little time!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful mandala in memory of Wink, it’s so pretty! Crochet has been an amazing coping mechanism for me. It helps to know despite what else I can do, I can create something with crochet.
The stealing always hurts. I think the best thing we can do is continue to talk about the consequences of stealing. There are too many people who don’t understand why stealing patterns is wrong, even when they are free. They fail to see that if people lose their property they will eventually stop publishing this way and everyone loses.
DearestDebi says
It’ll come to the point that if the people stealing my work keep stealing my views I will not be able to keep the blog running. I will never stop creating π

Thank you so much for the beautiful pattern for the beautiful Mandala. I will make it in honor and memory of my late daughter, Patty. She was my first born and my only daughter. She is with God now, she was only 48 and was my sunshine. I pray she will be watching me make this for her. Thank you for your story and I pray you are happy now as I have battled depression for most of my life. Prayers and angel hugs, Marie in Texas

Debi, Thank you for sharing such a beautiful piece of work. I know all about being depressed. I spent 11 days in the hospital for depression a few years after my daughter died. It was something I hadn’t fully dealt with and it left me feeling totally empty, although I had to other young children to take care of.
Prayers that you will continue to grow strong and be able to keep sharing!
Thank you for adding me to your group.

This mandala is beautiful. I can’t wait to make some. I too suffer from depression, I’ve attempted suicide several times and was actually very angry when I discovered I was still alive. After my last failed attempt I found out I was going to be a grandma and decided that must be the reason I was unsuccessful even though I knew it should have done the job. I’m on medication now which helps some and I have a service dog which helps even more but it can still be rough. I crochet a lot because it helps me focus on something other than the feelings of hopelessness that plague me most days. I’m also getting into doll making, I love dolls. Keeping busy keeps me sane.

I am hopelessly infatuated with mandalas. They seem to take me to another place – a good place – where I can lose myself in the designs. Yours is grand indeed. I send you good wishes with my thanks.
I Love Your Patterns says
Dearest Debi,
Thank you so much for the pattern, and I am so sorry that you have been through so much. I love your patterns so much, and have made quite a few of them for myself. I don’t think you should give up on something that you have been passionate about. It’s sad how some people don’t know how to appreciate sincere effort, and I cannot even imagine what you would have gone through when you discovered that your patterns are being stolen. And its heartening to know that you are looking to heal yourself once again by taking up the same thing which you love. Prayers for you to get back to normalcy soon !
I would love to make this pattern and gift someone. Thanks, I love this pattern !

Debi,
Thank you so much for the beautiful pattern. I am not sure if I am competent but I am going to attempt this for my Mom. My Dad just passed away and every butterfly she sees, she thinks it is my Dad visiting her to check in. I hope that is true. I think maybe this project would bring a little bit of happiness to her. I want to thank you for all of your hard work that goes into your patterns. We love and respect you for everything that you do. Crochet has pulled me out of a bad place many times and I am glad it has helped you too. Thank you for the beautiful tribute to Wink and that you for just being you.

Thank you for the pattern. And thank you for baring your soul when there are so many critics waiting to strike out at others. It seems many of us us crochet when having a depressive episode. Thank you for your honest and very touching blog post. I taught myself to crochet following bloggers like you after my first child was born. Crochet was a way to keep my mind busy and produce something that I was proud of and brought people joy while I was dealing with post partum depression. Now, two months after the birth of my second child, I find myself turning to my hook again to help me through another trying bought of post partum depression. I will make your mandala and think of you and say a prayer/send good thoughts to you and all others that struggle with this invisible and very painful illness. thank you so much fr sharing this, It’s beautiful. I am sorry to hear people have been stealing from you. it is so unfortunate to have people like that in the world and I hope you get some results regarding that soon.
Maggie says
Shady ppl often ruin it for the rest. Props on not letting the experience completely sour you & stop you from sharing freely. I’m sorry you were taken advantage of. It takes courage to be open & honest, to be the mature one when I’m sure you’d like to throw a tantrum sometimes. It’s never the easiest path, but it is the best, if only for your own self respect. You won’t be the one with regrets over your actions. You have an amazing gift & talent. One that I envy, and hope to reach the level of someday. God bless you. And know that your courage in sharing some of the more personal things hasn’t fallen on deaf ears. You’ll be in my prayers. We share that little demon (depression beyond ‘the blues’), and prayers are sometimes the one thing that helps me refocus until I can get moving again. I hope it will help you too.

Thank you for offering your beautiful patterns for free. I am more a collector of patterns than actually making them because I am a perfectionist in that when I see something so beautiful that someone has created I want to honour them by using the correct yarn or thread and I am on an extremely limited budget. I think it’s terrible that people would use your patterns as their own. They should be ashamed of themselves. What I do is, I print out your and others patterns and dream about being able to buy the thread/yarn used in the original and someday being able to make them. Please don’t stop, you are appreciated.

love your work. pls know you are not alone in fighting depression. i had my share a few years back. was on meds then stopped. cold turkey. i had to take charge. i had panic attacks from side effects of meds. but knew i was mentally capable of taking control. so far i am doing great. i remember ‘here and now’ what is going on attitude. as for folks stealing your ideas, that happened to me too. my sewing got it. but i did not fear. folks appreciate quality and came back to me. life goes on, do it for you or kids or something, such as designing. keep it up, we are all here for you too!
Natasha says
Thank you for sharing your beautiful designs with us. That says a lot about what a generous and big hearted person you are. Don’t let the bad people out there dwindle you down. Debi, know that you are loved by your family, God and all your fellow crochet addicts. I can not tell you how much I have enjoyed the MANY hours I have played with your gorgeous patterns. Thank you, thank you , thank you to infinity for the time that you put in to your creations for our pleasure. God bless you and keep you.

Debi, I’m new to your blog. And thank you so much for posting this. I have been using crochet as a release for my anxiety, it helps me feel in control yet relaxed and productive and it gets my creative juices flowing! This mandala is beautiful and now I can’t wait to get home and try it for myself! Thank you so much!
