Crochet Ruffle Skirt
I’ve had this ball of red heart boutique sashay ruffle yarn and I’ve been wanting to make something with it other then a scarf.
I decided to work up something similar to my crochet tutu waistband that I had made. I wanted a pattern that was adjustable so anyone could make it for any size, it’s super easy to adjust to the size you want.

Hook:
US H8/5.00mm
Yarn:
- 1 ball of Red Heart Soft Touch Yarn White – Master colour
- 1 ball ofΒ Red Heart Boutique-sashay Yarn Hip Hop (For larger sizes such as adult sizing you will need 2 or more Β balls)
- About 1.5-2 yards of an alternate colour of Red Heart Soft Touch. – Alternate colour (More yardage needed for larger sizing)
Supplies:
You will need one button & a yarn needle to sew in ends. I used some 1/4″ thick sewing elastic in theΒ waistband.
Gauge:
7 sc = 2″ wide
Size:
This is an adjustable pattern, instructions are for 22″ waist.
I made this for my little girl, she’s a little petite two and a half year old. Figure out the size of waist you want to make your ruffle skirt for, for mine I’m doing 22″. Multiply your number by 3.5 and you have your starting ch.
22″ x 3.5 = 77
Now we need to add 4 more chains to create a button loop.
77 + 4 = 81
So my starting chain count is 81.
When adjusting sizing, I have marked rows with an > before the row, these are rows that can be removed for smaller sizing or can be added for larger sizing, just make sure to add/remove rows evenly between the 3 marked rows (Each row is .75″ tall).
**You can do more than 20 rows to add a bit more length but you will need more than 1 ball of sashay**
Adding Ruffles..
You will need to use a US J10/6.00mm hook to add ruffles.
You will be using sashay yarn now. Below is a picture of the sashay yarn when you open it up you have this mesh design, along the bottom side is some fancy looking design and along the top you have loops, the top row of loops are your ‘working spaces’ which I’ve marked with little aqua hearts.
To start insert your hook as shown below (Inserted from bottom of the skirt towards the top)Β into one of the ch1 spaces created by row 8 (sc, ch1 row) , then take your sashay yarn and fold over the end about 3 working spaces long as pictured below.
Insert your hook into the first working space threw both layers as shown below then draw up a loop, insert hook into the 3rd working space of your sashay yarn.
Draw up a loop, this is your first sl st (as shown below).
Insert your hook into your next ch1 sp (as shown below), insert hook into 3rd working space and draw up a loop, this is your second sl st.
Continue working in each ch1 sp around and working in the 3rd working space of your sashay yarn.
When you’ve finished the last sl st of the rnd, insert your hook under the post of the next dc (as shown below), insert hook into 3rd working space of your sashay yarn and draw up a loop, this will create a sl st around the dc post.
Now you can work in the ch1 spaces of the next row. Continue working until you finish the length of the dress.
To finish off you will need some sewing thread and needle, weave needle along the unfinished edge of the sashay end and tie a knot attaching it into your dress, you can do this at the beginning of the sashay yarn to hide the unfinished edge.

I’m having a slight problem with the PDF. Cleanprint included the pattern for the waist band, but the skirt part only has the pictures, no written instructions.
I love your clean print. I wish everyone had it. I have an iPad and pdf’s are the only way I can semi-organize my patterns.
Thanks for all your hard work for us crochet junkies!

There are some written directions with the photos, maybe when you were using the clean print option you might have deleted the text by mistake?

I LOVE this skirt. Super cute. I am going to make some in the red/white/blue Starbella yarn for my girls for the 4th. I can’t wait to get started.

Thank you for all the wonderful information you share. I have never been great at learning from reading a book, I’m more of a hands on person. The videos you share and step by step pictures are very helpful. I feel better about stepping away from my comfort zone and trying new things.

Dear Debbie. I have been going thru this pattern over and over and I just don’t see any where the part of the pattern for the waist ban and skirt rows. Only see where to insert hook for ruffle yarn.. Hugs

I am excited to make this skirt with some left over yarn I have. I am confused about the number of stiches. Starting with Row 4 the directions say to skip 1 sc. How can the number of stiches be the same as the original chain stiches if your skipping stiches throughout each row? I have made this down to row 14 several ways and need help. Thanks.
DearestDebi says
There is a ch 1 st that takes place over the skipped st.

I have downloaded this pattern and read it through several times, but I don’t see the section where you add in the elastic for the waist band. Can you help me out?
DearestDebi says
I sewed it into the sc waistband to give it a bit of elasticity in the waist since my daughter has such a tiny waist. You don’t need to use it unless you find it’s loose.
Ginny Harrison says
Hi how do you get your number to multiply? Is it the inches of the waist? I’m really confused on how to get the starting chain. :=/
DearestDebi says
The starting # of chains is listed in the pattern

I am making this for my niece. Her mom told me her waist is 21 inches but she is 6 years old. So I am wondering if by waist you meant hips? She we measure where the skirt would fit or the natural waist? Thanks!
DearestDebi says
My daughter doesn’t have any difference between her hips and waist, they were both the same measurement.

Thank you for a great idea!
