Have you ever wondered why when you buy a medium #4 worsted weight yarn that it’s not the same as another? When buying yarn and trying to get the right weight you must also look at the recommended hook size!

Below are two different types of yarn both made by Red Heart. Both yarns say they are a Medium #4 when looking at A & C on the label. Now if you look at B & D this is the recommended hook size to make a 4×4 single crochet square.

Make sure that when you purchase yarn for a pattern that you check out the label of the suggested yarn matches that of the yarn you would like to try. ~Yarn label hook size is used to help identify yarn weight!~  (You should ALWAYS check your gauge before starting a project).

Checking Your Gauge!

**When checking your gauge always use the hook size the pattern suggest, not the hook recommendation on the yarn label**

To check the gauge of Red Heart soft you will need a 5.5mm hook and it says that 12 sc by 15 r = a 4″ square.
To start ch 13, sc in 2nd sc from hook and in each ch across, turn. (12 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3-15: Rep row 2.
Your work should equal a 4″ square as shown below.

Did your work not turn out to 4″ square?
If your square is smaller, you are probably crocheting too tightly, either try a looser stitch or you can increase to a larger hook size.
