Crochet Flower Bud Granny Octagon Afghan
Crochet Flower Bud Granny Octagon Afghan is designed by Lisa Vannes-Cockayne. She recently contacted me with the pattern to work up the Crochet Flower Bud Granny Octagon and has allowed me to edit and share the pattern so that others can make this beautiful afghan.
I am going to be working something up with these Granny Octagons in the near future, for now here’s the afghan pattern.

To work up this Crochet Flower Bud Granny Octagon Afghan you will need to work up Octagons, Squares and Triangles. The Crochet Flower Bud Granny Octagon pattern is available HERE. Below are the instructions for the Square and Triangle as well as joining and the edging.
Special Stitches:
- cl st – Cluster Stitch – Insert hook into st, draw up a 1/2″ loop, (yo, insert hook into same st, draw up 1/2″ loop) 2 times, yo, draw up through all 6 loops on hook.
- yo – Yarn Over
Square..
Starting with a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as beg dc), 23 dc in center of ring, tighten ring (it will have a small opening in it), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (24 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 1, hdc in same st, *sk 2 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next dc, sk 2 dc, hdc in next dc, rep from * around, invisible join to beg hdc
Your finished square should be 2.5″
Triangle..
Starting with a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as beg dc), 10 dc in center of ring, tighten ring, do NOT join. (11 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 3, 2 dc in the same st as ch3, sk 2 dc, hdc in next dc, sk 1 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next dc, sk 1 dc, hdc in next dc, sk 2 dc, dc in last dc (ch3), fasten off.
Your finished triangle should be 2.5″ wide, 2 inches tall.
Sewing it all together..
Below is an example of a 35″ square afghan. For this size you will need 49 Octagons, 36 Squares and 24 Triangles. If you are looking at making a crib sized afghan you will want to add 2 extra rows of octagons to one side of your work.
Each side of your octagons, squares and triangles have 7 stitches. To sew your pieces together use a whip stitch.
Using a yarn needle, thread some yarn into your needle (I’m using different coloured pieces and yarn to show the work better). Take 2 of your pieces and place them with right sides together, inserting your needle into the back loops of your stitches on one side.
Leave a tail so you can sew the end in, insert your hook into the back loops of the next stitch, tightening your yarn.
Continue working int he next stitches in the back loops, continue joining the other pieces together.
Edging..
Evenly sc around the entire piece, working 9 sc evenly across the octagon sides, 9 sc along triangle sides and working 2 sc in each turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, cl st in next sc, sk 1 sc, (sc in next sc, cl st in next sc, sk 1 sc) around, invisible join to beg sc.

Hi Debi! Love your YouTube tutorial on the entire project! Actually could use the step-by-step. Roughly how much yarn do you guessestimate is needed to complete this project? Attempting to cost it out so I can order the yarns online. Thanks!
DearestDebi says
What size are you looking at making? I am going to figure out the yardage of each piece. Once we know that and the size you want to make we can make a better estimate of how much yarn to order.
Norma Williams says
Pretty much like the diagram 7 rows each way. I just need to know ounces so I can order the right amount of yarn

I recently found this pattern and I am making a throw blanket for my oldest daughter. I watched the youtube video for your triangles and squares before I started making them. I read the pattern afterwards and noticed a mistake. On your triangle, the last line only says to do one dc in the last stitch and the youtube video says to do three dcs. Just trying to help. I love this pattern. Thank you so much for posting it. I can’t wait to finish this. I will be making another for my youngest daughter. She is jealous her older sister gets one first.

I will have to take a look at it, thank you for bringing it to my attention.
