Crochet Cupcake Purse with Cherries on Top

May 15, 2013 By: DearestDebi9 Comments

Your favorite brands under one roof: Patons, Bernat, Caron, Lily Sugar‘n Cream, Phentex, and now Red Heart! New and innovative yarn is added all the time.

Crochet Cupcake Purse with Cherries on Top

I have brown yarn.. I’m not really a fan of the colour brown.. Well unless it is a hair colour. But not for a yarn. I got it to make a beard but have yet to venture into beard making. So what do I do with this brown yarn?  I will make a Crochet Cupcake Purse with Cherries on Top.

This Crochet Cupcake Purse with Cherries on Top took me FOREVER to make.. haha I’ve been at this thing for 2 months, I first made the base then had NO idea how I wanted to do the icing and the base sat around until I got an idea for the icing. I worked up the icing but then came the horror of sewing pieces together. I seriously need to be in the mood for small pieces and sewing!

Yesterday I finally decided to put together my Crochet Cupcake Purse with Cherries on Top after I finished a simple crochet flower and another tape measure elastic because some little fingers got ahold of the one I made. I’m sure those little fingers will be all over this purse first thing in the morning so it’s hidden until I can take some pictures.

And for the boys there’s a Crochet Oscar the Grouch Inspired Trash Can available HERE.

Yarn: I used about a 1/4 of a 5oz ball of Red Heart Soft Yarn Chocolate and about half a 3.5 oz ball of Red Heart Shimmer Yarn (DISCONTINUED) Snow. (For the cherries and leaf I used some scrap yarn, The red yarn used was Bernat Satin Yarn Crimson and the leaf was made with some Red Heart Soft Yarn -Guacamole)
Hook: US H8/5.00mmSupplies:

I used the lid of a sour cream container that measures approximately 4.625″ in diameter.

Special Stitches:

Puff St – 5 dc in same stitch, draw up a loop, remove hook, insert into first dc and back into working loop, draw up a loop.

Gauge:

Using one strand of Red Heart Soft 3.75 hdc = 1″
Using 2 strands of Red Heart Shimmer 3 hdc = 1″

Notes: It’s useful to use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each rnd. Do not join rnds unless specified.

Rnd 7: sc in each st around. (48 sc)

Take both pieces of work with wrong sides facing together, you will now work through both layers of work.

Adding lid to bottom of bag..

(24 puffs)

Rnd 15: ch 2 (counts as first hdc), *hdc in dc, hdc in ch1, rep from * around, do not join. (48 hdc)

Rnd 16: hdc in in beg ch2 and each stitch continuously around for 5 rows.

Rnd 17: *hdc in 6 sts, hdc-dec, rep from * 5 more times. (42 hdc)

Rnd 18: hdc, *ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in next 2 sts, rep from * around 12 more times, ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc once, sl st into next st, fasten off, weave in ends. (14 ch1 sps)

Using a yarn needle I took a strand of yarn and sewed around from the inside coming out in the center of the puff stitches to pull them into the purse. (There is an example of how to do this on my crochet flower basket dearestdebi.com/crochet-flower-basket)

Tie..

Using a US H8/5.00mm and 2 strand of Red Heart Shimmer..

Ch 48, working in back ridge of chain, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, fasten off, weave in tail but do not weave in beg tail, you will use it to attach the tie to the tie.

Ch 8, sc in second ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc 3 times in last ch, now working along the other side of the chain, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3

ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st to beg st, fasten off weave in end, do not weave in beg tail you will use it to attach the tie to the tie.

Cherries..

Using a US G6/4.00mm hook and Bernat Satin Crimson..

Ch 2, sc 6 times in beg ch, do not join. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3 & 4: sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 5: sc-dec in each sc around. (6 sc)

Rnd 6: sc-dec once, fasten off leaving long tail for sewing, insert hook into inside of cherrie and out through the next st, draw up yarn (as shown below).

Attaching Cherries and Leaf..

Attach one cherry to the end of the tie with no tail, sew the cherries closed around the end of the tail, leave tail to tie to leaf, attach leaf to tie, tie a double knot with the red and green tails.

Weave the tail through the opening of the cupcake, then attach the other cherry to the other end of the tie sewing the cherry closed and tie a double knot with the white and red tails.

Hi Debi Love the cupcake purse pattern and getting ready to try it. Just one ?? what did you use on the frosting part to look-like sprinkles. What suggestions do you have to simulate the sprinles and best way to attach. I thought of using bugle beads, but it might be too costly.

The little sprinkle things I used I believe were earrings from a dollar store, they were just for decoration when I took the picture, I took them out, if I had left them in I’d probably bend in the ends on the back side of them.

You could buy some beads that would fit over the yarn, add as many as you want to use onto your yarn before starting. then move them into place where you want them.

The blue download button requires your email so that it may stamp the pdf with your details, it does not send to email, it is an automatic download.
