Crochet Snow Bear Scoodie

Crochet Snow Bear Scoodie

Crochet Snow Bear Scoodie pattern by Dearest Debi.
Over a year ago someone had posted a picture of a crochet scoodie but there was no published pattern. Over the year I figured that a pattern would be available but nothing was published.
I originally intended on using Lion Brand Homespun yarn for my crochet scoodie but I didn’t have enough on hand so I used Bernat Boucle. They are both the same weight of yarn so you could use either of these yarns to make your own Crochet Scoodie.

This is adorable! I have some leftover skeins of Bernat Boucle that I had no idea what to do with. Thanks to you, Dearest Debi, I have a great project to use the boucle up! You’re a talented and generous soul for sharing this wonderful scoodie pattern.

My original intention was to use up the scraps of boucle I had around the house but as I got working on it I kind of wanted it all the same colour and ended up having to buy 2 new balls. :P

Hey Debi, Wanted to tell you that I am currently working this with Lion Brand Homespun, too. I had purchased four skeins for an afghan that never happened. While both Bernat Boucle and LB Homespun are bulky yarn, Homespun is thicker than the boucle and makes a really interesting texture for the hooded scarf. I liked working with the Bernat Boucle better but I’m using Meadow Homespun, which is one of the variegated colors, and it is becoming an amazing piece with the color shading. Thanks again for such a versatile pattern. At least two lucky gals are getting this scarf for Christmas this year!

I’d love to see how it works up with the LB homespun, I would have used homespun if I could have gotten a sale price on it but missed the sale so I used the boucle.

Debi – I really liked this scoodie, but I have vision problems and just cannot read the font you have on your blog. I wonder if you would be willing to send me the pattern in a plainer text font that I can upsize and bold so I can see it? I sure would appreciate it. Thx.

    • Debi Dearest November 14, 2012 at 1:00 PM Reply

Hi Sande, I changed my font, hope it’s a little easier to read.

I have to make pdf files of all my blogged patterns to offer a print option, once I make this pattern into a pdf I will send you a copy so you can use the zoom in and out feature.

I love bears!! And this is totally awesome!!!! Thanks!!!

Hi Debi! Love your pattern! I’ve already made a black one with bear ears, and am currently making my daughter’s friend a grey one with cat ears :) (I used Bernat Softee Chunky, I found it a little stiff, so any more that I make, I will definately use the Soft Boucle)

    • DearDebi December 29, 2012 at 7:51 PM Reply

Thank you! My original intention was to use lion brand homespun, for this pattern it would require 4-5 balls. Only thing is you need to wait for a sale otherwise the homespun is pretty pricey, well at least it is here.

  6. [...] http://dearestdebi.com/2012/10/snow-bear-scoodie.html I think this might be my next project. I haven’t crocheted at all since just before Christmas. I’m itching to get back at it, but my wrist has been bugging me (just FYI: if your bad wrist gives out while lifting a heavy coffee table, don’t continue moving the table, thinking it won’t hurt this time. It will, and for a week!), and just tonight the other hand started hurting. I’m guessing there’s a change in the weather. That and my birthday is next week, so old age is setting in [...]

    • DearestDebi January 6, 2013 at 10:59 AM Reply

Take it easy and let those wrist heal, or use some sort of brace. I have to take my own advice as I just sprained my wrist the other night so it’s been slow crocheting since. Hope you get to work one up. :)

Hi Deb, just love this pattern, how can I adapt it to use regular yarn??? Hook size etc???? I always make a proto type with regular yarn before I put out money for the nigher price stuff. Sure will be a great pattern tho!!

    • DearestDebi January 8, 2013 at 2:47 PM Reply

You could try using phentex chunky or berant chunky, with the hook size mentioned they both will work up about the same. Also another person worked theirs up with caron one pound, you can check it out HERE. Just make sure to always check your gauge works out the same.

I would like to have a .pdf of this pattern if you have one.

    Thank you,

I was wondering if you can adjust this pattern for a child? I would love to make this for my grandchildren. Thanks for your help and/or advice.

    • DearestDebi January 25, 2013 at 10:38 AM Reply

      This is one size only.

    • Brenda C January 26, 2013 at 6:10 PM Reply

Thank you so much ! I am going to give it a try and will let you know how it turns out.

I’m making this and I’m wondering what the “leave 6 stitches unworked” and work around it..is that for the front of the hat or what? I always worry I’m doing it wrong and don’t want to mess it up. Plz let me know

    • DearestDebi February 7, 2013 at 10:58 PM Reply

On Rnd 10 you finished with 80 stitches, for row 11 you are only going to hdc in 74 of them.. then proceed to row 12.

What is the center back of the hood? Is it the beginning stitch or something else?

    • DearestDebi February 21, 2013 at 3:30 PM Reply

There is a U shape cut out in the hood piece that is worked up, the part where it folds together is the center back of the hood.

I am fairly new to crocheting and wanted to know of you could tell me how to size the hoodie to fit your average 3 year old. I’ve managed to ‘child size’ the scarf portion.

    • DearestDebi March 2, 2013 at 11:05 AM Reply

This is a one size only free pattern, it is as is. In order for it to be child size I would have to rework the entire pattern..

  13. MJ March 3, 2013 at 1:36 PM Reply

    DearestDebi,

    Figure it out.

Here’s what i did for toddler size:
12 HDC for width of scarf for toddler. length of scarf should be as long as the child is tall. Fold up 4-5″ for pockets.

For the hood, I modified hat start pattern a friend gave me.

Magic ring, chain one, 9 HDC into circle. Join to first HDC, chain one.

Round 2: 2 HDC into each around, join to first HDC. (18)
Round 3: 2 HDC into first stitch, 1 HDC into next. Repeat around (27)
Round 4: 2 HDC in first, 1 HDC In next two stitches, repeat around (36)
Round 5: 2 HDC in first, 1 HDC in next three stitches, repeat around (45)
Round 6: 2 HDC in first, 1 HDC in next four. Repeat around (54)
    Round 7: HDC around (54)
Round 8: 2 HDC in first, 1 HDC in next 8. Repeat around. (60)
    Round 9-15: HDC around (60)

  14. MJ March 3, 2013 at 9:37 PM Reply

That should have read: figured it out.

I love the pattern. The only problem that I have is that I am allergic to Bernat yarns. What would you suggest as a substitute? I was thinking of Lion Brand Homespun yarn or my own handspan alpaca/sheep yarn.

    • DearestDebi April 17, 2013 at 10:49 AM Reply

My original intention was to use lion brand homespun but I didn’t have enough, you could use it as it is also a #5 Bulky like the Bernat boucle. Just make sure to check your gauge. :)
