Crochet Edging Tea Pot Cozy

Some time ago April asked me if I could use some material I had to make a tea pot cozy, only thing was my serger and sewing machine are out of commission until I get them serviced, I bet it was over a year ago she asked me but I didn’t have a way to make it. Until recently…

I heard about the Sharp Hook so I cut out my material all excited to add crochet edging to it but this hook did not work with the type of material I was using, it would be a great hook if working with lighter fabrics such as a cotton broadcloth.

I then thought about tracing wheels, they perforate, there must be some kind of blade to do this type of thing for material so I asked my facebook fans and that’s when I learned about the skip stitch blade. I called every store in the city that sells material yarn and craft supplies and tools!! but no one had anything like it so I purchased all three blade from the site and a fiskars 45mm handle, any 45mm circular blade handle will work with the blades!!

They came in the mail within a week!

After I used the blades I was really worried I wouldn’t be able to see the holes to work in because I was using black material but it’s a lot easier then I expected!! I love these blades!! I just need to be a little more steady when using it, for a first attempt I think I did pretty well. I believe this will fit better on Aprils tea pot!!

Take a white 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper, the height of your tea cozy will be 8.5″ and to get the width, fold your  11″ paper in half, measure from the fold out 4.75″, mark your spot and draw a curved line up to the top of the fold. Cut along your curved line so you end up with a piece of paper as shown below.

Now that you have your template you can cut out your material. I used some fleece and some cotton stretchy stuff, it’s like a high quality t-shirt material with a print on it.

Once your material is cut out, put your pieces together so you have 2 working pieces, each working piece should have a piece of fleece and a piece of printed material face up (as shown above). Use your skip stitch blade to work holes 1/4″ from the edge all the way around the tea cozy working through both layers of material, do this for both sides of your work. **Make sure you work through both layers of material for each side, this will make sure your work and holes are lined up evenly!!**

Once you have your holes in place, I inserted my smaller US D3/3.25mm hook into the right corner, draw up a loop, ch 1, sc in next hole and each hole around, working 3 sc in each of the corner stitches, to finish off I did an invisible join to the beg sc. You will want to do this for both pieces. **Make sure when working sc’s you do so a little loosely so you don’t pull to tightly on your work causing puckering**

You should now have 2 pieces like the one below.

Place both pieces of work with wrong sides of work facing each other infront of you, from the left corner count 15 stitches and mark off, now working from the right corner under the inside loops only (as shown below) with your US F5/3.75mm hook, draw up a loop in the corner of your tea cozy, ch 1, sc in each st across until you get to your stitch marker, fasten off, weave in ends.

To add a little loop pull, with a long tail insert hook under joining sc at the top center of the cozy, ch 10 using both tail and working yarn (This will give you a thick pull), join with a sc in next stitch, fasten off, weave in ends. Sew on snap button in corner of open work.
